Gandalf says that a new stage of the war of Middle-earth is upon them: war has come to Rohan. Simple though he is, there is an uncomplicated sincerity about everything he does.

Some were getting ready for war against Sauron who is an ancient evil. Evil and death and suffering do not have the final say. Meanwhile, a ship carrying Aragorn and his army of ghost men arrives, and the group overwhelms the orc army. Tensions run high, because both the riders and the hunters are wary of the Enemy. Through his powers he creates endless number of Uruk-nai monsters to cover the middle earth with their terror.

This immortal realm beyond the sea shines in the eyes of the elves, in the Phial of Galadriel, and the tree of Gondor and is ultimately the fountain from which flow the goodness, truth, and beauty, which so guide the heroes of this tale. The fellowship is declared over, and the fourth age of Middle-earth begins. On the way, they encounter Faramirwho, unlike his brother Boromir, resists the temptation to seize the Ring. Aragorn is crowned King of Gondor and takes Arwen as his queen. He departs in a boat, but Sam insists on coming along.

Lewis observed that the writing is richer than that: some of the 'good' characters have darker sides, and likewise some of the villains have "good impulses".

Faramir questions Frodo and Sam. Even characters who succumb to temptation such as Saruman and Boromir, serve as cautionary examples that even the mightiest among us are not above a fall.
